Our Coffee Story

Coffee was one of the reasons why I fell in love with Melbourne the first time I moved here. Its culture of coffee is superb. The myriad of choices for brunch is just so many.

When I worked as a barista was when I realised that there are better ways to prepare the espresso and froth the milk well. That made my love for coffee grew even stronger.

Nowadays,
I go to cafes around Melbourne to to enjoy and rate their coffee. I also rate different brunch places that I've been to.
I rate the quality of the coffee and the brunch with 5 as the highest. I also make comments about the ambience, customer service and other things that I notice when I come to check out these places.

If you are thinking to visit Melbourne, don't forget to try our coffee. Check my reviews for ideas on which places to try. It's also a good idea to try a brunch place or two while you're in town. And perhaps dinner as well. Hahaha.

Bon appetit!

Melbourne coffee reviews

Picture
Cafe Vita at Highpoint Shopping Centre (2.5/5)
The ambience was great with glass roof as it was inside the Highpoint Shopping Centre so that was a plus. I enjoyed reading here because of the natural light. However, coffee wasn't the best. It was a compromise, that is, great place to read vs not best coffee.
Picture
Stamford on Collins St (3.5/5)
I remember the staff here were very friendly. They were open until late so we used to stay here for a couple of hours after dinner. Coffee was alright. They had dim lights so not ideal place for reading a physical book. Bring your laptop or iPad instead.
Picture
Selene's Chocolatier in Box Hill Shopping Centre (4/5)
They have good coffee here. Staff are friendly too. They have good, soothing music so if you come here early, you can enjoy your coffee while you read a good book.
Picture
Degani in Box Hill on Middleborough Rd (4/5)
The coffee here is good and the staff are friendly. Come here early so you can enjoy, relax and read. It becomes busy towards lunch time.
Picture
Rush cafe at Federation Square next to NGV (3.5/5)
This cafe is at Federation Square, next to the National Gallery of Victoria. The area has translucent glass roof. So, on a sunny day, you can enjoy your coffee while reading a good book. The cafe is part of an open area entrance towards the National Gallery so it gives you a good view of the others shops as well as Flinders Street.
Picture
Cacao Green on Bourke St (eventually closed down) (4/5)
This place has closed down but they used to make good coffee. Oftentimes, I would stay for two or three hours working on a project. This space seems to be changing tenants all the time. At one stage, it was a shoe shop. This is conveniently located next to Starbucks so if you happen to drop by here and you find that it's another shoe shop, you can go for a Starbucks coffee instead.
Picture
Coffee Club at DFO Centre on Spencer St (3/10)
Sorry, I took the photo after I finished the coffee. I like the view here with the huge glass window overlooking Spencer Street as well as the other shops in the Centre. Coffee is okay.
Picture
Jasmine Cafe (Filipino cafe) Derrimut, Victoria (3.5/5)
Again, I took the photo after I finished the coffee. Coffee was alright. I came here for the view with two sides of the cafe having glass windows overlooking the roads. And if you happen to stay here until lunch time, you can also try their Filipino lunch dishes.
Picture
Bluepoint cafe on Russell St (3/5)
The spot is actually quite convenient. It's walking distance to the State Library, tram stop and Lygon Street where the restaurants and shops are. It's not exactly in the centre of Melbourne CBD so it's not as busy and noisy. Melbourne Central Station is just down the road. So if you don't want to wander far away from the CBD where you can a little bit of peace, then check this place out.
Picture
Four Pigs Cafe in Beaconsfield, Victoria (3/5)
I had coffee here with a friend and every few minutes our conversation was always interrupted with trucks passing by. I don't know if it would help if we sat inside but I'm not coming back there.
Picture
Hudson Cafe on Victoria St, East Melbourne (4/5)
I like the coffee here. The ambience is good too. It's a medium-sized cafe so it's perfect. Not too small that you feel claustrophobic and not too big that it's too much to navigate.
Picture
Degani at Southland Shopping Centre (4/5)
I like the coffee here too. I think with a franchise, you can expect that the coffee taste to be uniform across different locations. The cafe is just outside the Apple Store in a shopping centre in Cheltenham.
Picture
est1906 Cafe, Seddon, Victoria (4/5)
This is our brunch place every public holiday because they are open. Coffee is okay. Food serving is a decent size. So, if you want to have a big breakfast, try this place out. Take the window seat overlooking the road. Not a bad view.
Picture
Little Tommy Tucker, Bentleigh, Victoria (5/5)
This is so far the best coffee I ever had in Melbourne. It perfectly suited my liking. Texture of milk was done well. The brunch food here is amazing as well. I would definitely recommend this place.
Picture
Cafe inside BMW Doncaster (3.5/5) - free coffee for customers and potential customers

Not bad for a free coffee.
Picture
Hunters Harvest Cafe in Seddon (3.5/5)
When I saw the bubbles I though it wasn't to be a good but it wasn't that bad at all (except for the bubbles). I won't come back here though.
Picture
Chloe Cafe in The Chen Apartments in Box Hill (3.25/5)
This is a little cafe on ground level in one of the highest residential buildings in Box Hill called The Chen. Coffee was not bad.
Picture
Coffee Cartel on Little Malop Street in Geelong (4/5)
The place where I was staying in Geelong recommended this place. There's not a lot of seats inside but the coffee is good here.
Picture
Zouz Cafe on Toorak Road in Camberwell (3.5/5)
We came here mainly for brunch which was good. We had the Big Breakfast and yes it was big. Coffee was reasonably good.
Picture
Gotcha Cafe at Melbourne Central (3.5/5)
This place used to be Gloria Jeans but now it's called Gotcha Cafe. Coffee was okay. It's overlooking the the intersection of Swanston and La Trobe Streets. Good view.
Picture
FooMoo Cafe at Deakin University, Burwood, Victoria (4/5)
Coffee here is surprisingly good. Never expected a good one at university.
Picture
Fusion Cafe at Deakin University (4.5/5)
This place is on the Elgard Road side of the campus. The are plenty of seats so you can stay here for a couple of hours and work or read. Very good coffee!
Picture
Margo at Crown Casino (2.5/5)
This is a restaurant in the Casino complex building. I probably won't order coffee next time I'm here. We only came here because it is open until late and the food was cheap. You can also get a free parking at the Casino complex. You just need the Casino member card which is free to join. Just to any of the Casino information booths and ask for it. They will require some ID.
Picture
Baci Cafe at Crown (3/5)
There are not a lot of good options at the Casino for coffee. This place is open until late like a few others places at the Casino so we tried their coffee. It was okay.
Picture
Santucci Cafe on Toorak Rd in Camberwell (3.5/5)
Coffee was good. I had brunch here once but I found that the price didn't not justify the taste nor the size of the serving.
Picture
FD (short for Freckleduck) Cafe in Geelong at the corner of Malop and Yarra Streets (4/5)
Coffee was pretty good. Next time you're in Geelong, you have to try this place. The place is conveniently located near the Westfield Shopping Centre and walking distance to the waterfront.
Picture
Launch Espresso and Kitchen inside Westfield Shopping Centre in Geelong (3.5/5)
Coffee was reasonably good. It could be improved. The staff were focused on customer turnover rather than the quality of the service for each customer. They're probably just trying to get as much sales for the day.
Picture
Woven Cafe in Yarraville (3.5/5)
Coffee was good. I could come back but perhaps when it's a little quieter. It was insanely busy when I came here around 10ish and I was lucky to get a window seat or stool shall I say.
Picture
The Old Paper Shop in South Melbourne (3.5/5)
South Melbourne is a good area to check out. The are heaps of brunch and coffee places. You can also enjoy shopping at South Melbourne Markets. You'll find stuff in here that you don't normally find at suburban shopping centres. Coffee was alright.
Picture
Reef Galleria and Aquarium in South Melbourne (3.75/5)
We checked this place out mainly for the different aquarium designs. It was very interesting. It's more of a galleria/aquarium than a coffee shop.
Picture
Porta Via Espresso at Melbourne University Law School on Pelham Street (3.5/5)
It's hard to say how your coffee is going to be like as it depends on the barista making it. Generally, it's reasonably okay. Good view of the University Square so that's a plus.
Picture
Safe Cafe at Deakin University (2.5/5)
This is one of the cafes at Deakin University that are first to open in the morning and that's the only reason I come here. Coffee is a pass.
Picture
The Penny Drop in Box Hill (3/5)
This is a new cafe in Box Hill. It's reasonably clean including the toilet. It has a good ambience too. Keep up the good work.
Peta Cafe which became Good Vibes Cafe in Box Hill (4.25/5)
Picture
I quite like the coffee here. I get my caffeine fix here every Saturday on my way to Deakin. They recently changed owners but the coffee quality is still there so all good.

Picture
Corner Cafe at Deakin University (2.5/5)
This spot is very convenient because it is right next to the Deakin Library in Burwood. If you want to have a break from your reading or essay, you just quickly walk there and get your caffeine fix and perhaps sandwich as well. There's only one issue, the coffee is not the best. I'd rather buy a cold drink here instead of a coffee.
Picture
Marriott Bar and Cafe inside the Marriott Hotel (3/5)
Hotel cafes are the ones that open until late. That's the reason why we come here. We normally look for a place where we can work for a couple of hours after dinner and this is one of them.
Picture
Bonbons Bakery in Brimbank Shopping Centre (5/5)

The staff are very friendly and the coffee is good. Check out this place next time you're in the western suburbs. Bonbons price is reasonable and consistent with other franchises too other than the one in Box Hill.
Picture
Ferguson Plarre Bakehouses in Brimbank Shopping Centre (3.5/5)

This is an okay place. Coffee is not bad but the customer service is not the best. Staff are not friendly and you can tell the staff don't really care about its customers. A simple smile can go a long way and make someone's day and customers will come back.
Picture
Bonbons Bakery in Burwood One Shopping Centre

Nice place and coffee is good and their prices are reasonable.
